What is Work for Lodgings?

Work for Lodgings is a service to enable volunteers, known as guest-workers, to offer some quantity of work, to people who have a requirement for such work, known as hosts. In return for the work hours provided, the guest-worker receives free accommodation from the host. The Work for Lodgings network connects guest-workers and hosts.

From eldery care or housework to help on the farm or on a boat, volunteer guest-workers are an indispensible aid and provide a support network for many people. For many hosts, having volunteers ready to lend a hand is pivotal in them being able to function or survive.

Want to be a Guest-worker?

One of the better-known benefits of volunteering as a guest-worker is the impact on a family or small business. Unpaid guest-workers often provide an essential function or skill set. However, volunteering as a guest-worker is a two-way street, and it can benefit the guest-worker as much as the host. Dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends, expand your network, boost your social skills, and live in places where you might otherwise never get the opportunity to spend time.

Guest-workers receive free accommodation. For many guest-workers this benefit is a game changer. For students, it can enable visiting a top university. For travellers, it can enable freedom of movement, the visiting of expensive cities, or remote ranches.

Want to be a Host?

Becoming a Work for Lodgings host and involving a guest-worker takes time and effort, and of course accommodation. You need to devote time to defining your project, recruiting and managing your guest-worker, you need equipment so that your guest-worker can work, and a room or studio where your guest-worker can stay.

While guest-workers aren’t free, your investment in their involvement can yield enormous rewards in the long term.

What guest-workers bring?

Guest-workers can:

  • Offer support and help to your home or small business.
  • Allow you to involve a more diverse group of people and meet new friends.
  • Bring energy and enthusiasm to your home or small business. Guest-workers join your project because they want to be there, not just because it is their job, so they bring a unique energy.
  • Bring new skills and experience that may otherwise be unavailable to you.
